Think of it as a GPS for surgery: the surgeon is still driving, but the system knows the road.
Autonomous Subtasks
The FDA has approved autonomous execution for specific, well-defined subtasks: suturing in controlled environments, tissue retraction, and camera positioning. These aren't glamorous tasks, but they account for 20-30% of surgical time. Freeing the surgeon to focus on complex decision-making during the critical phases of a procedure is the real value proposition.
The Regulatory Path
Full surgical autonomy remains distant — and appropriately so.
